Course Objectives
The main objective of this course is to
provide students with an in-depth understanding of
the design and implementation of database systems.
Topics Include:
- Review of Relational model, E-R Diagraming, Normalization, SQL
- Query Processing and Optimization, Transaction Processing, Concurrency Control, Recovery
- Database Security and Authorization
- Introduction to Networking: Major components, Protocols, TCP/IP
- Client/Server Architecture: Multi-tiered architectures, middleware, ODBC, Performance
- Web Based Internet/Intranet Database Integration, XML
- Distributed Databases: Architecture, Distributed transaction processing
- Data Warehousing: Heterogeneous component systems, data scrubbing, DW Design
- On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) - Models and Implementation
- (if time permits) Data Mining
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have
advanced theoretical and hands-on skills to effectively
develop, implement and manage medium to large-scale database
management systems.
